Educational Somatic Movement is much more than a collection of exercises. It is a method of learning that changes the relationship between the brain, the nervous system, and the body.
People are often surprised that slow, gentle movements can produce such profound changes. The answer lies in the principles behind the practice. When these principles are understood, each movement becomes purposeful, the learning process becomes clearer, and the results become deeper and longer lasting.

It Begins with a Different Way of Seeing Yourself
Everything starts with one fundamental shift in perspective.
Thomas Hanna invited us to stop thinking of ourselves as mechanical bodies and instead experience ourselves as a Soma—a living human being perceived from within.
A Soma is not simply muscles, bones, and joints. It is the ongoing experience of sensing, moving, feeling, and responding to life. Every physical action, every emotion, every thought, and every experience is part of the same integrated living system.
When we begin practicing from this perspective, movement becomes an exploration rather than an attempt to fix something that is broken.
Why Does the Body Become Stiff?
Once we understand the Soma, a natural question arises.
If the nervous system is designed for efficient, coordinated movement, why do so many people gradually become stiff, restricted, and uncomfortable?
Thomas Hanna observed that much of this change develops through three automatic survival responses that are built into every human nervous system: the Green Light Reflex, the Red Light Reflex, and the Trauma Reflex.
These reflexes are essential for survival. They prepare us to act, protect ourselves, or compensate after injury. The problem begins when they remain active long after the original challenge has passed.
Over time, these unconscious patterns quietly shape posture, breathing, coordination, and movement, eventually becoming so familiar that we no longer notice them.
The Missing Piece: Sensory Motor Amnesia
As these reflexes become habitual, another process gradually develops.
The brain slowly loses its ability to accurately sense and voluntarily control certain muscles. Thomas Hanna called this condition Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA).
This is not true weakness, nor is it simply muscle tightness. It is a learned loss of communication between the brain and the muscles.
Because the change develops gradually, most people assume that stiffness, imbalance, and reduced mobility are simply normal parts of aging.
Educational Somatic Movement offers a very different explanation. The nervous system has learned these patterns, and because they are learned,
they can also be unlearned.
Why Stretching Alone Cannot Solve the Problem
Understanding Sensory Motor Amnesia changes the way we think about improving movement.
If the brain has lost voluntary control over certain muscles, simply pulling those muscles into a stretch cannot restore the missing communication.
This is why stretching often provides only temporary relief while the same tension soon returns.
The solution is not to force the muscles to become longer. The solution is to help the brain regain precise voluntary control over them.
